The Best Ginger Beers and Ginger Ales Reviewed

Posted by Boisson Staff on

A good mixer makes a drink. And when we’re stirring or shaking our favorite cocktail, we’re often looking for a good ginger ale or ginger beer.

Wait, what’s the difference again? We’ll get into it.

Whether you’re looking for a top-quality ginger mixer or you want to drink it on your own, here are our favorite ginger beers and ales.

Ginger Ale vs. Ginger Beer

Believe it or not, these two aren’t the same thing.

Ginger ale is a sweet, bubbly drink made from carbonated water flavored with ginger. Ginger ale has a sweet flavor, with more spice, citrus, and fuzziness – like any good soda. Like the name implies, ginger beer, on the other hand, is brewed and fermented but remains nonalcoholic. It often has a stronger, less sweet flavor, and not as much carbonation.

Let’s get into our favorite ginger ales and ginger beers now that we have that cleared up, though.

Avec ginger can
Avec — Ginger

For low-cal spicy-sweet goodness.

This Jamaican ginger beer inspired beverage is spicy, sweet, and just a little bit sour. It is low in sugar because it is made from pineapple juice and agave. We love it in a Moscow Mule or anywhere you’d need a good ginger beer. With eight all-natural ingredients and no artificial sugar, this is a mixer you can feel good about.

Root Elixirs — Ginger Beer Soda

For a zesty ginger punch.

We love using Root Elixir in our favorite mixed drinks. It’s made with fresh lime and ginger root for the purest flavor. The added pinch of cayenne adds just enough subtle depth of spice to make this drink delightfully interesting on its own as well. Made with only natural ingredients, the whimsical branding is almost as delicious as the beverage itself.

Fever Tree spiced orange ginger ale

Fever Tree — Ginger Ale, Refreshingly Light Ginger Beer, Ginger Beer, and Spiced Orange Ginger Ale

For deep ginger flavors.

Fever Tree has several ginger beverages to choose from, each made with a blend of three different gingers from distinct places. The flavor is smooth yet complex and never too sweet. Try the ginger beer for a strong mixer for a Dark and Stormy. Or taste the ginger ale for a great mixer with your nonalcoholic rum or whiskey. If you’re looking for something unique, don’t forget to sip the Spiced Orange Ginger Ale, a delicious full-bodied drink that goes well with nonalcoholic cognac and rum. If your calorie conscious, their Refreshingly Light Ginger Beer is the choice for you.

Hella — Ginger Turmeric Bitters & Soda

For a nonalcoholic cooler.

Hella’s Ginger Turmeric Bitters & Soda is zesty, herbal, and just bitter enough to make it taste like a sophisticated take on your average ginger beer. Served in a can, it’s a great thing to take to a picnic or outdoor BBQ. Hella is refreshingly adult, and we love it alone or mixed with a splash of non-alcoholic whiskey.

Betty Buzz ginger beer
Betty Buzz — Nonalcoholic Ginger Beer

For clean ginger beer taste.

Blake Lively’s Betty Buzz Ginger Beer is everything we’re looking for in a classic ginger mixer. It’s smooth, fresh, balanced, and made with all-natural, low-cal ingredients. The bright citrus flavors pack the perfect amount of ginger punch, and we quite enjoyed it with our nonalcoholic rum, tequila, vodka, or whiskey.
