Some of the Best Things in Life Happen by Accident
The Negroni Sbagliato is a perfect example. It takes everything people love about the classic Negroni. Bitter, herbal, citrusy notes, and lightens it up with a sparkling twist. But how exactly did this “mistaken Negroni” come to be?
The story goes back to 1972 at Bar Basso in Milan. Legend has it that a busy bartender, perhaps distracted mid-shift, grabbed a bottle of sparkling wine instead of gin while making a Negroni. Instead of discarding the drink, they served it and the customer loved it.
The name stuck. In Italian, “Sbagliato” literally means “mistaken” or “wrong.” But this “wrong” version of a Negroni turned out to be exactly what many people didn’t know they were looking for.
Since then, the Negroni Sbagliato has become a go-to for those who want all the rich flavor of a Negroni, but in a lighter, bubblier, and more sessionable form.
Why People Love It
-
Bitter meets bubbly: The signature mix of bitter orange, herbs, and sweet vermouth-like notes, balanced by effervescent sparkling wine.
-
Lighter feel: It’s lower in alcohol than a standard Negroni. Or, in our case, no alcohol at all.
-
Perfect for aperitivo hour: Ideal as a pre-dinner drink or easy afternoon refresher.
