Feature #2 Lautus Savvy Red - Non-Alcoholic Wine

$20.00 Sale Save

Lautus, Latin for pure, elegant, and sumptuous, creates non-alcoholic wines out of lush vineyards in South Africa. An involved, traditional winemaking process precedes dealcoholization, taking great care to ensure the wine is equally as complex and enjoyable as its alcoholic counterpart. The Lautus Savvy Red is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage harvested in the coastal region of South Africa. Certain grapes are picked early to provide optimal acidity, while the rest are harvested at their peak point of ripeness. The wine is then aged for 9-12 months in oak barrels before being twice passed through a gentle spinning cone technology: once to capture and preserve the wine’s aromas and flavors, and again to remove the alcohol content.

With a classic, supple red-fruit palate upheld by fine tannins, this red is not too sweet and has a classic, vinous mouthfeel. It makes for an easy household red to keep on hand, a rich sangria base in the summer, and a lovely mulled wine for cooler days and cozy nights.

The History

Non-alcoholic red wine has a longer history than most people realize. The earliest versions appeared in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when temperance movements in the United States and Europe sparked demand for “unfermented” or “dealcoholized” grape juice. These early attempts were often more like sweet juice than wine, lacking the complexity and structure drinkers were used to.

The real breakthrough came in the 20th century with the invention of techniques to remove alcohol after fermentation. Methods like vacuum distillation and spinning cone columns allowed winemakers to make a fully fermented red wine—developing its tannins, aromas, and flavors—before gently extracting the alcohol. This meant that, for the first time, non-alcoholic reds could taste like their alcoholic counterparts rather than grape juice.

By the 1980s and 1990s, a handful of European producers, especially in Germany and France, were experimenting seriously with NA reds, though the category was still niche. The 2000s saw slow but steady growth, driven by health-conscious consumers and new markets. But it’s in the past decade—fueled by the global low- and no-alcohol movement, better technology, and a shift in drinking culture—that non-alcoholic red wine has truly come into its own. Today, leading winemakers treat NA reds as a craft product, focusing on varietal character, mouthfeel, and food-pairing potential, bringing them into mainstream wine conversations.
